Proverbs 18:4
The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook. KJV
Psalms 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old
Psalms 49:4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
Matthew 13:35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
In the footnotes of The New Oxford Annotated Bible RSV(1977), the “deep waters” of a man’s mouth could be replaced by “unfathomable or dangerous:” The words of a man’s mouth are unfathomable or dangerous. In contrast, “the fountain of wisdom is a gushing stream”(RSV) or “flowing brook”(KJV) which the RSV notes indicate could be read as the fountain of wisdom “refreshes.” I.e. The words of a man’s mouth are unfathomable or dangerous; the fountain of wisdom refreshes.
There is a different take on the verse in Believer’s Bible Commentary(1995): “Moffatt understands the verses as saying that the words of a wise man are a deep pool, a flowing stream, and a fountain of life. They are profound, not shallow; flowing, not brackish; refreshing, not insipid”[p.837].
Either way you interpret the words, the Bible tells us in Proverbs 2:6 “For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding” and in James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
